ARTIST STATEMENT

I began painting ballpark portraits in the summer of 2022.  I sit in the shade of the outfield fence or grandstand, and I draw the scene on watercolor paper.  This takes three or four sittings and 10-15 hours.

As every landscape artist knows, drawing architecture is like doing a portrait of a person.  The dimensions and scale have to be exact, or the viewer knows that something is off.  I travel in our mini-camper van, and spend the night at a campground or park.

The second step is to begin painting the watercolor, and to take photos.  It's critical to do this at the correct time of day, to capture shadows, which highlight the features of the ballpark.  As I'm drawing, I often think of the players and volunteers who built the grandstand, back in the day.  I send the photos to my laptop, and I finish the watercolor at home, which takes another 10-15 hours.

The next winter, I transcribe the watercolor to a 2'x3' canvas.  I always end up moving the center of the piece a little up/down or left/right.  I use the artist's license to improve the dark/light contrasts of the colors.  Then I paint the acrylic in my studio.  This takes another 60-90 hours.

The prints are produced at Arts District Imageworks in Northeast Minneapolis, the premier maker of art related printing in the Upper Midwest.  The prints are made on 'velvet platinum fine AA paper', which gives them the appearance/texture of the original watercolor.
